My Heart Wasn't In It

The Heart of a Killer
Jaci Burton
Released Oct 25th, 2011
409 Pages
Mira Publishing

Firstly, I want to give Ms. Burton props for stepping out of her comfort zone and making a go at the Romance Suspense Genre.  WOO HOO!!

With that being said, I will say that I thought the PLOT had soooooo much potential. It could have went anywhere with all of the choices we had for the killer. BUT, it just didn't do it for me. The story kind of fell flat. The plot just flopped somewhere after a few chapters and after a while I just didn't care WHO the killer was.

Anna was likeable in the first few page or two and then she kind of annoyed me. Dante was a hero, who lacked the hero traits. I mean, who just left their girlfriend after a traumatic event like that?? I understand it's fiction, but to never say goodbye?? And their chemistry....WAS SO NOT JACI BURTON....The dialogue was OFF and the relationship between them was just OK for me.

Now on the other hand....I thought Gabe was SEEEEEEXY, and If his book is the next in the series, I might just have to read it anyway!!

The plot was very repetitive, and I was kind of hoping that the person who attacked her was a kid obsessed with her, and his brother continued in the obsession, or something like that. Or Roman was really the one that tried to attack her, but a kid in the alley was mistaken for the guy in the shuffle.  Something other than what the outcome actually was.

So I will say it was ok/good, but not great/amazing. I usually LOVE Ms. Burton's stuff so I was actually very sad that I didn't like this one that much!! There is still hope for the next book in the series!!

Throwback Thursday (on Friday)

Sorry Guys...forgot yesterday was Thursday and posted a great review instead of the usual throwback.  I have been sick since I came home from the NJRW Conference, so please excuse the Medicine Brain.

Fools Rush In
Kristan Higgins
Released Nov 1st, 2006
384 Pages
HQN

Rewarding job as a local doctor on Cape Cod? Check. Cute cottage of her very own? Check. Adorable puppy suitable for walks past attractive locals? Check! All she needs is for golden boy and former crush Joe Carpenter to notice her, and Millie will be set.

But perfection isn't as easy as it looks—especially when Sam Nickerson, a local policeman, is so distracting. Sure, he needs a friend after being dumped by Millie's fortune-hunting sister, but does she really need to enjoy his company that much? He is definitely not part of her master plan. But maybe it's time for Millie to start a new list…

I already owned the Kindle Edition, and currently bought the new Mass MArket Paperback becaise I loved the cover.  I picked it up this week and began skimming through the book, remembering the parts I loved and the parts I laughed.  I remembered leaving this book to read last, after downloading all Kristan's books.

I didn't think I would love it.  I wasn't sure that the heroine was going to grab me like she did.  Millie was great, her jogging regime was HYSTERICAL and her heart was HUGE!!

I loved Sam, what a wonderful guy.  Who wouldn't fall for him.  And Joe the Carpenter.  He is the bad boy that we have all fallen in love with.  The guy that we have such high hopes for and in the long run, just aren't what we hoped they would be.

I am so happy that I gave this book a chance,  As it turned out to be one of my favorites of Kristan's.  Not that I haven't LOVED all of her books!!  This will teach me to never judge a book by the first few pages!!

This Debut Title is a HOME RUN

Saving June
Hannah Harrington
Releasing Nov 22nd, 2011
304 Pages
Harlequin Teen

When her older sister commits suicide and her divorcing parents decide to divide the ashes, Harper Scott takes her sister's urn to the one place June always wanted to go: California. On the road with her best friend, plus an intriguing guy with a mysterious connection to June, Harper discovers truths about her sister, herself and life.

What an unbeliveably amazing debut by Hannah Harrington.

Just the music alone blew me away!  She transports the reader to the inside of the van, along with Harper, Jake and Laney. The songs alone carry so much meaning, so much description without having to use any words at all.

Hannah has taken a subject that is not an easy thing to write about, and does an extrodinary job at taking us on Harper's journey of anger, sadness, love and forgiveness. I got choked up so many times while reading this wonderful YA novel.

I was drawn to Harper from the first page, she was honest and was so... real. Her reaction to Jake is classic and I was drawn to their relationship. The secrets, the understanding, the jealousy and the unspoken connection between them was what kept me reading late into the night.

This is a great book for anyone interested in reading an emotionally charged novel that takes you on a exciting journey with three kids searching for answers.

LOVED IT!!

**And make sure you check out the list of songs that were used in the book, it was located at the end of the book and contains some VERY cool songs.  I downloaded a bunch of them after I was finished reading the book....Songs have a way of expressing so much emotion without even having to say a word!!

VERY SLOW....RIDE

Slow Ride
Fast Track #5
Erin McCarthy
Released Oct 5th, 2011
304 Pages
Berkley

Was this book written by someone other than Erin McCarthy??  The first chapter or two was cute and was setting up to be a really great story.  And then it juts went downhill...at least for me.

The dialogue between Diesel and Tuesday was just weird...it wasn't sexy...it was just weird.  And the dialogue between Diesel and everyone else was weird...He had NO voice, or he said things that I didn't think a guy like him would say...and his guy friends sounded like girls!!

For someone who LOVED the whole series so far, I was SOOOOOO disappointed with Slow Ride.  There was no REAL conflict....she drank too much (which made me like her less...she seemed like a real bitch) and he was just blah.  And for me to have NO CONNECTION to either of the characters is huge...I love romance and can normally find the best in all books...but this one...I skimmed through the last 35% of the Kindle Book.

The best part of the book was seeing Ryder and Suzanne interact with their baby.  They seemed really happy.  And all the Evan/Kendall crap with Sara and the maybe, baby...was so unnecessary.
All in all...this book was a mumble/jumble of BLAH!!

I want Erin McCarthy back.....I hope she comes back before the release of Eve's book!!

BACK TO THE GRIND

Hello All,

A friend asked me today if I was going to write about my experience this weekend at the NJRW "Put Your Heart In A Book" Conference.  I hadn't even thought about it, but then I figured...WHY NOT?

The NJRW put on such an AMAZING conference.  This happened to be my first conference with not just NJRW but the whole RWA Organization.  The ladies, including Co-Conference Chairs, Marlo Berliner and Ruth Seitelman, were such sweet, intelligent women and made the NEWBIES, like me, feel so welcome.  Shirley Hailstock, the NJRW President, is such a classy, friendly, warm person, who I had the honor to meet.  And EVERYONE....and I mean EVERYONE that I met or was introduced to, were some of the sweetest, talented people that I have ever met.  Everyone is there for the same reason.....Because we love to use our creativity to write Romance, whether it be Contemporary, Paranormal, Suspense or Erotica.

As for the line up of Talented Authors that gave workshops and inspiration talks...I was blown away by their easy going personalities, and their KINDNESS towards the people who strive to be in their shoes one day.  From Kristan Higgins (Squee...Fangirl), Rachel Gibson (ahhhhhhh....Rachel) to Laura Griffin and Brenda Novak.  Some of the most Talented, Funny and down right..COOL people I have ever met!!

I learned so much at the conference.  From making my book into a page turner to using your imagination to create a story behind anything, even Antique Silver Napkin Rings!!  (BTW...Victoria Alexander is one of the funniest people...EVER)

And I have to throw a shout out to Kerry and Victoria for being two of the coolest, most talented people that I met at the conference.  I wish you both all the best with your writing careers and I hope that very soon we will all be celebrating the publishing of our First Books!!  Good luck with those Partials, and let me know if you have any takers....Ill be saying a prayer for you both!!

And to a lovely woman name Joyce that I met on my travels from one workshop to another, who got asked for a FULL....I am so excited for you and I wish you all the success!!  They would be lucky to publish a wonderful person like you!!

And another special HELLO...to all the beautiful, talented, amazing women I met this weekend....I would be honored to read any of your work...KIT and I wish all the best for your careers!!

So.....I would have to say that the NJRW Conference was a huge hit and I was able to take home a huge amount of confidence.  Just knowing that there are so many others in the same boat and under the same stress...Makes you feel not so alone.

Thank you so much to all the NJRW members for hosting such a GREAT weekend!!  I will certainly be back!!

XOXO, Lisa

If you live in or around NJ and are looking for an amazing group to join...check out the NJRW

Sometimes REVENGE can be SWEET

Sweet Revenge
Last Chance Rescue #8
Christy Reece
Released Oct 4th, 2011
386 Pages
Ballantine Books

Firstly, I have to say that I have found a NEW, AMAZING Author in Christy Reece.  And Secondly, I have to say that I might just like Sweet Revenge better than Sweet Justice....or MAYBE EVEN!!

I loved the timeline of Sweet Revenge...The whole story doesn't take place over three days but months.  Cristy sucks you in at the first page and then brings you along on a Very Suspenseful, Very Emotional journey with Jamie and Dylan.

I LOVED Jamie as the heroine.  She was sweet and somewhat...reserved..might be the word, and she has had SO many bad things happen to her, but she never lets them bring her down.  She has a VERY strong mind and she pushes through the pain because if she lets it take her, she will lose herself, and that is NOT ok with her.

Dylan...AHH...the Strong, Silent type.  I loved early on when he would use a grunt or a one word answer, for like weeks at a time.  I would have been screaming by day one!!  He is the best kind of HERO you could want to write about.  Hurt by the past, strong protector and VERY SEXY!!  I really like Dylan and his integrity.  He may have hurt Jamie at times, but he was always thinking about her safety, first and foremost, even if she wanted to kick some bad-guy ASS!!  And this Villain needed more than just an Ass Kicking....I believe he got what he deserved...and his sick, perverted SON!!  haha!!  I loved the part where all Lance could see was "gleaming teeth"!!  GO LCR....KICKIN SOME ASS!!

So Christy, I am looking forward to what you have next for us with Sweet Reward, and I hope you continue to write books so that your fans can keep devouring them!!  Always love the HEA!!

The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson
Finding Mr. Right is the furthest thing from Beth Davis's mind when the Reno professor takes Thanksgiving break at a colleague's Lake Tahoe cabin. Until Coinneach McFarland arrives to fix a suspicious leak. It looks like somebody's playing matchmaker for two people sworn to stay single. But as things heat up, Beth is astonished to find she has discovered her soul mate just as she'd given up looking.

The Christmas Set-Up by Jill Shalvis
Competing architects Zoe and Jason have two weeks to come up with the design to win a coveted new project. But when a snowstorm strands them together at a secluded cabin, Zoe sees her chance to show Jason how she really feels. With romance blooming under the mistletoe, can she get the gorgeous Scrooge into the true Christmas spirit?

The New Year's Deal by Julie Kenner
Five years ago, Cleo Daire and Josh Goodson said goodbye and went their separate ways. But first they made a promise to reunite. Now the ex-lovers are spending New Year's Eve in a romantic cabin, where passion takes them by surprise and long-wished-for dreams can sometimes come true.

You will certainly have a Smokin' Holiday season with this Sexy Anthology featuring novella's by Jill Shalvis, Julie Kenner and Vicki Lewis Thompson.

My favorite was The Thanksgiving Fix by Vicki Lewis Thompson.  I felt a connection between Beth and Mac from the first few pages.  I was convinced that they could actually fall in love after meeting hours before....can we say Love at First Sight!!

These three novella's will heat up those cold winter nights and get you in the mood for some cuddling of your own!!

So pick up a copy, light a fire, snuggle up with a blanket in your favorite chair and enjoy...you won't be Disappointed!!

ERIC DONOVAN, BAD BOY??

Real Men Will
Donovan Brothers Brewery #3
Victoria Dahl
Released October 25th, 2011
384 Pages
Harlequin

It was meant to be a one-night stand. One night of passion. Scorching-hot. Then Beth Cantrell and Eric Donovan were supposed to go their separate ways. That's the only reason he lied about his name, telling her he was really his wild younger brother. Hiding his identity as the conservative Donovan. The "good one."

But passion has its own logic, and Eric finds he can't forget the sable-haired beauty with whom he shared a night of love. When Beth discovers that Eric has lied, however, she knows he can't be trusted. Her mind tells her to forget the blue-eyed charmer. If only every fiber of her being didn't burn to call him back.

I have to say...I really think that I liked this book the best out of the three in the Donovan Brother's series.  I was waiting for Eric's story and let me tell you....he does NOT disappoint!!

The love scenes between Eric (or Jamie..haha) and Beth were HOTT, with a capital H!  I loved their chemistry, and the way they were when they were with each other, like no one else in the world could make them feel like the person they were with at that very moment!!  It was pure sexual chemistry, but between two people who were falling in love and denying it the whole time!!

Eric had felt lost in his place within the Donovan Family and the only time that he felt like he was home was when he was with Beth....and she was "COMFORTABLE" when she was with him...which if you read the book, you will understand that for her it is a big step to have a clear mind during sex!!  All it took was the right person.

There were a few trust issues and some family issues along the way, which gave us a deeper look into our characters and really got to know them.  I was really cheering for them the whole time, and have been in Eric's corner since book one...I really was drawn to him as a hero and wanted him to have his happy ending!!

I am a softy for a broody, dark, sexy man!! AHHHH.  Eric Donovan Bad boy??  OHHHH YEAH!!

Another awesome trilogy by Victoria Dahl.  She always writes fun characters that I can really connect with and that keep me reading until the HEA!!

And if you want to read about what really happened at that Expo where Eric and Beth first made fire, check out The Guy Next Door, featuring the novella that started it all!!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

TWO WAY STREET
LAUREN BARNHOLDT
Released June 26th, 2007
288 Pages
Simon Pulse

There are two sides to every breakup.

This is Jordan and Courtney, totally in love. Sure, they were an unlikely high school couple. But they clicked; it worked. They're even going to the same college, and driving cross-country together for orientation.

Then Jordan dumps Courtney -- for a girl he met on the Internet.

It's too late to change plans, so the road trip is on. Courtney's heartbroken, but figures she can tough it out for a few days. La la la -- this is Courtney pretending not to care.

But in a strange twist, Jordan cares. A lot.

Turns out, he's got a secret or two that he's not telling Courtney. And it has everything to do with why they broke up, why they can't get back together, and how, in spite of it all, this couple is destined for each other.

This happens to be one of my all-time favorite YA Romance books.  I love the set up of the book, how it goes from present to past and from Jordan's point of view to Courtney's.

They start out as completely different people that what they become at the end of the novel.  He is a punk kid and she is a smart, semi popular girl....but when they get together...it just works!!

Some drama happens and Jordan feels that ending things with Cortney is the ONLY way out....but was it?  UMMM.......NO!!

They are a super cute couple, and we get to see their relationship grow and build from the first night they meet to their first few days after the infamous ROAD TRIP!!

Lauren has tapped into the YA mind with this one.  The characters are so real, and might I add that I have a huge crush on Jordan....who doesn't love a semi-reformed bad boy!!

And the secondary characters are hysterical.....Jocelyn and B.J. had me cracking up.

So if you haven't read anything by Lauren Barnholdt yet.....you need to pick this one up today!!

Other books by Lauren Barnholdt to look out for:
-One Night That Changes Everything
-Sometimes It Happens
-Aces Up
-Watch Me (or Reality Chick)

Living With Regret

Take This Regret
Amy Lichtenhan
Released July 27th, 2011
The Writer's Coffee Shop Publishing

A promise to love her forever.
A betrayal she could never forgive.
A change of heart that leaves her questioning everything she thought she believed.

Can she forgive someone who has committed the unforgivable? Or are there some wounds that go so deep they can never heal?

Take This Regret is my kind of story.  I love the "lost love" story, or in this case....The Love that got away because you told her to choose between you or the unborn baby she was carrying....well that one is an easy one!!

I love all of the emotion, pain and hurt that comes with a lost love story, and let me tell you this book had A LOT of all of those things.

Elizabeth is my kind of Heroine....she knew from the beginning what would be best for her unborn child and she spent the next six years doing everything in her power to continue doing what is right, that is until the day that Christian comes waltzing back into their lives and throws Elizabeth completely off of her game.  The drama unfolds and the painful conversations begin.  I just wanted her to be happy, I wanted her to finally have the man that she never stopped loving...but I wasn't sure that I wouldn't have thrown a punch if her would have done to me what he did to Elizabeth.

I liked the fact that we are able to see both POV, from Christian and Elizabeth.  Even if the Chapters got a bit confusing because they aren't labeled who is speaking.

All in all this was a heartbreaking book that had the tears flowing after page one.

Recommended read from me!!!

Sex, Gossip and Rock & Roll
Nicola Marsh
Released Oct 1st, 2011
192 Pages
Harlequin Presents

Backstage Pass In all her time as premier tour manager to Australia’s stars, Charli Chambers has never had someone as infuriating – or delectable! – as successful businessman Luca Petrelli along for the ride. He might always be in the gossip columns, but there’s no way she’s letting him claim VIP status! But Luca’s wicked eyes are just too tempting… In spite of herself Charli’s soon attending after-parties – just for two. She wants to believe this is one duet that’s about to go platinum, but in spite of Luca being unprintably good in bed can she ever get close enough to the real Luca for their fling to be more than just a one-hit wonder?

Firstly, I want to say that the book has a VERY cute premise.  I like the idea of the bosses right hand woman and his bad boy grandson hitting the scene and making sparks.  Luca was a hottie with a capital "H".  But that wasn't all that he was...he was intelligent, easy going but with that bad boy broken thing going on...How was Charli ever going to resist that.

I liked Charli as the heroine.  She was kick butt and didn't take shit from anyone....but the repetitive mentioning about her mother kicking her out and Hector raising her....I just felt like it was mentioned sooo much...and sometimes the two of them with their abandonment issues got annoying.

I have to say all in all...it was a quick, cute read with a pair of hot music executives, so right there you have a fun story!!  Worth the read if you like stories about two broken people who find each other!!

Can you ever come HOME again?

Home Sweet Home
An Emerald Lake Novel
Bella Riley
Released Oct 1st, 2011
386 Pages
Forever Publishing

Home Sweet Home is a sweet, heartwarming story about lost love and coming home again.

Andi is returning to her hometown after ten years away to convince the town council to allow her client to build condos on a prime water front property. The town will be a tough sell but it isn't the town she is worried about, it is the new Mayor, Nate Duncan. Nate and Andi were high school sweethearts and while she was away at College Nate wen't thru some very tramatic events and when she decided that she couldn't drop out of school to come home to be with him, things blew up and she hasn't seen him since. You can only imagine the words that are slung between these two ex lovers, with still so much hostility and yearning between them.

I actually felt sorry for Andi. She seemed so ALONE in her life, away from her mother and grandmother, still greaving her father's death, about to loose her job which is all she really has. And Nate....what a phenominal person to raise his baby sister after all the tragedy...I love admirable heroes....even when sometimes they can be too stubborn for their own good!

The book was an enjoyable read. I love books that have some focus on the community, especially nosy knitting groups who always get all the good gossip. I have to say I really liked Evelyn, Andi's grandmother. She reminded me of my own grandmother, and the fact that our grandparents have a past that we can learn from...and great stories to share.

This new series by Bella Riley is going to be a good one....I am already looking forward to the next book, Rebecca's story.  I am very curious to find out what happened with Rebecca and Stu and to see how life is going for Nate and Andi.

Happy Reading!!

Now, sitting alone at a bar in Coronado, California, on December 31, she decides to do something radical . . . and lets a brooding good-looker take her to bed. This is officially the Romance Book that got me back into my obsession with reading!!  A few years back I saw it sitting on the book shelf at my mother in laws house and after reading the blurb on the back my interest was Peaked!!

I have to say....it was one of the sexiest books I had ever read, I think I might have blushed while reading some of the racy sex scenes....and then I blushed more because I had borrowed the book from..MY MOTHER IN LAW!! haha

Christie sucked me into the Romance world with this great read and I have been not just a big fan of her books but with The Romance Genre as a whole!!

So here's to you Ms. Ridgway...and My Mother in Law, Luisa, for helping me along on my journey to finding some amazing, amazing books and authors....and to helping me find my true calling.....as a Romance Writer!!

Grabbed My Heartstrings....

Heartstrings and Diamond Rings
Jane Graves
Released October 1st, 2011
448 Pages
Grand Central Publishing

HE'S THE MAN OF HER DREAMS . . .
In a world full of frogs, Alison Carter is determined to find her prince. Maybe her dating past is more Titanic than Love Boat, but she's seen enough happy marriages to know that true love is possible. No matter what, she won't give up on happily-ever-after. If she can't find Mr. Right, she'll simply hire someone who can.

SHE JUST DOESN'T KNOW IT YET
When Brandon Scott inherits a successful matchmaking business, he thinks his prayers have been answered. Set up a few lonely ladies, collect the fee, how hard can it be? No one needs to know he's not really a professional matchmaker-especially not his first client, the beautiful, spirited Alison. Soon he's falling for her-and her dreams of kids and carpools. But Alison is getting close to figuring out his secret, and if she learns he's deceived her too, she'll walk right out the door, taking Brandon's heart with her.

What a great read....I am still feeling all giddy and excited about this New Release By Jane Graves.  From page one we are laughing at the sarcastic one liners from our heroine, Allison.  She is the average girl and we are drawn to that because she is like our best friend or co worker, so sweet and nice, but she just can't find the right guy.

Enter Brandon, ahhh Handsome Brandon....Right Guy? Well, more like the matchmaker who is trying to make some cash off of his dead grandmothers old business, before he gets his finances together and takes off.

What happens when these two team up is funny, enjoyable and let me say, it just tugs on your Heartstrings.  I really enjoyed this book, I had that tight chest feeling of sadness and hope for them both throughout the whole book.  I know a book has gotten to me when the tears start...It was just a really great story and even had a few secondary "Love Matches", but they don't take away from the story, they round it out, and that is what I love about this book!!

Add this book to your "TO READ" pile.....If you want to feel the tug of your heartstrings!!
