Sometimes the best gifts are the ones you least expect.

When LA Times journalist Zola Mitchell decides to head home to San Francisco in December, it's to write a piece on the legendary Alcatraz prison. It has nothing to do with her high school crush Oliver Tworek, who's recently moved back to start up a tour boat business to The Rock. At least, that's what she keeps telling herself.

But when Oliver asks her to dinner, Zola can't refuse. And when he kisses her under a display of Christmas fireworks from aboard his boat, she can barely remember her own name.

After twenty years, nothing seems to have changed. Oliver's still popular and gorgeous, and Zola's still…well, Zola. Behind the successful job, and underneath her shiny, new grown-up exterior, Zola still feels like the skinny girl from junior year English class. Will she ever be able to conquer those insecurities? And more importantly, will she ever get to know the real Oliver—the one who might just have a few secrets of his own?

One of my favorite reunion romances is when the couple had a relationship in High School or one had a crush on the other, more of an unrequited love, which was what the situation was between Oliver and Zola in THE MARINER'S GIFT.  For such a quick read, there sure was quite the story and I enjoy every moment.

I especially loved the flashback scenes where we get a chance to see this "Unrequited Love" in action during High School.  I remember those crushes, and they were never easy when the boy didn't notice you back.

Newell drew out the emotion and the feelings of "what if" and "could be destiny".  It was touching and left me feeling nice and warm!

A Home for my Heart by Nola Cross

“They say you can never go home again. Try telling that to your heart.”
When big-city attorney, Jonathan Silver, agreed to be godfather to his infant niece five years before, he didn’t dream he would actually end up as her guardian. He’d never imagined himself as a family man. Now he’s not only an instant father to little Rachel, but also inherits the house where he grew up in the small town of Everfield, Washington. When he left Everfield fifteen years before, he never planned to return. Now for Rachel’s sake, he’s reordered his priorities and come home to join a two-man law practice.
Merridee Cresswell always wanted a big family. She and her ex-husband tried unsuccessfully for years to have kids; their marriage eventually failed from the strain. Since then, she has poured all her maternal feelings into her children’s clothing store, Frog’s Togs, and the special program she runs to help disadvantaged kids in Everfield.
When his first legal client hires him to sue Merridee for negligence, Jonathan has to investigate the shop keeper’s character. Is she really as flakey as his client says? Or is she the warm, lovely woman she appears to be, the woman so ready to take Rachel under her wing and make Christmas special again? And what about him? Could there be room in her heart for Jonathan too?

Sunny’s Second Chance by Pepper Anthony
“What if love really is lovelier the second time around?”
It’s a rough Christmas for the just-divorced Sunny and her six-year-old daughter, Jasmine. When your no-good husband leaves you for a pretty young dancer, it’s hard not to feel old, fat and frumpy. But then she meets a handsome widower, Ben Stillman, and his young son, Spencer. The two kids hit it off, dragging their parents into an unwitting friendship.
Sunny’s never thought about dating a white man. The whole interracial thing seems risky, especially since Jasmine is still struggling with adjusting to her father’s defection. What if the little girl gets attached to Ben and Spencer, and things don’t work out?
Ben has been struggling under the weight of grief since his wife’s death a year ago. He suspects it’s too soon to move on, but somehow he wants to make Christmas special for Spencer. Then he meets Sunny and everything changes. She chases away the darkness and makes him feel alive again. Can the two of them learn to trust the magic between them long enough to give love a second chance?

I love when I get to read an anthology, especially a Holiday Anthology, where each story on it's own is Sweet, Heart-warming and has me routing for the couple to work out.
I enjoyed CANDLELIGHT AND KISSES Holiday Anthology because each story had an ending that made me feel good, characters whom were all searching for that special someone, and a little bit of drama to keep the story fresh and interesting!
I have to say, the heroes of each romance all grabbed a little bit of my heart, but it was Ben from SUNNY'S SECOND CHANCE, who stole my heart.  For all the loss he already faced and then to find a woman like Sunny who makes him come alive again, and to maybe lose that too, my heart went out to him!
If you want to curl up with some Hot Cocoa, and a Sweet (sometimes Sexy) holiday Anthology, grab CANDLELIGHT AND KISSES!

For Kaylie Newell, storytelling is in the blood. Growing up the daughter of two gifted writers, she knew eventually she’d want to follow in their footsteps. While she’s written short stories her whole life, it wasn’t until after her kids were born that she decided to shoot for the moon and write her first romance novel. She hasn’t looked back since!

Like most writers, Pepper Anthony has worn quite a collection of hats over the years ~ voice actor, artist, bookkeeper, retail sales ~ but she’s always wanted to be a writer. Her biggest dream has been to see her name on a book cover. Now, with the advent of e-publishing, the covers may be virtual, but the thrill of seeing her name on them is real. She’s humbled by the idea that her stories might draw in a reader and provide an hour or two of entertainment.

She’s been married to her best friend Tom for thirty-one years. Together they’ve raised two amazing sons, and recently welcomed their first grand-daughter. Most days you can find Pepper at the family's computer repair shop in a small town outside Portland, Oregon. At night she goes home to her rambling fixer-upper in the woods and toils at her writing, attended by a small menagerie of furry assistants.

She loves it when readers take a moment to reach out and let her know what they think of her stories. She hopes you'll feel free to contact her.

He's got the temperament of a lion, and she's just the one to tame him.
Police records clerk Emma Beaumont has always played it safe, never taking many risks. Quiet, shy, and a little overweight, she's convinced herself that she's comfortable with the way her life is. That is until she lays eyes on incredibly sexy Lieutenant Johnny Street. But she's never met anyone with such a terrible attitude. He's a jerk. Everyone thinks so.
Little by little, Emma is forced to uncover a stronger, spunkier part of herself, one that isn't afraid to stand up to him. As she gets to know him, she starts seeing glimpses of a very different man. A man who has known great heartache, and as it turns out, has good reason for embracing such bitterness. Behind his sharp tongue and harsh demeanor, lies a young man who's desperately afraid of losing what's left of himself.
As Emma's intense desire for Johnny turns to love, she will have to ask herself how far she'll go to chip away at his frosty heart. And at what cost.
Content Warning: contains sensual sex and strong language

TAMING JOHNNY was a highly anticipated read for me, and I was so happy to be able to read it early.  Johnny Street...Yes...Just the name gives you tingles...Johnny Street is a Jerk, an Asshole, a Prick, but he has his reasons, and he isn't making any excuses.  He doesn't need anyone, especially the voluptuous Clerk at the station, who gives him googly eyes, or so he makes it sound when he approaches her about her "Crush" on him.  I think I would have hit him, and I think Emma almost wants to.

But then lucky for him, he actually has a softer side, well, we can call it the "Less Prickly" side, which causes him to fall victim to Emma's Web....Poor Emma, as she wanted to do was have a crush on her boss, and maybe have him like her back, but this Johnny "I say it like it is" Street, is a crush killer.

I found myself laughing at some parts where Johnny was able to get me as riled as he gets Emma, and then feeling like he just needed a really big hug, and maybe he would stop being an ass.  If you love a tortured hero, like I do, you will truly truly enjoy TAMING JOHNNY.  Kaylie Newell has yet to disappoint me, and I will continue to sit in anticipation for her next release!!

Enjoy and Happy Reading!

No Handcuff's Needed

Teaching Officer Lonesome
Kaylie Newell
Releasing Aug 20th, 2012
61 Pages
Beachwalk Press
Source: Publisher

The first thing that comes to my mind after finishing this upcoming release is that the Title of the book is very deceiving.  I was thinking handcuffs, leather and maybe some naughty talk, but this novella was so much more than that.

In Kaylie Newell's upcoming release we meet Jack Malone, a widowed officer who is deeply attracted to the young woman he pulls over, and she is not making it any easier to continue being the "good guy".  Hope Marlow can barely make ends meet with her job at walmart, but she wants more for her twelve year-old sister than she had.  The one thing she wants for herself is Officer Malone, but he makes it clear that nothing will ever happen between them.  He is not yet over his late wife, and he believes that their age difference is too much of a hurdle, even if the only thing she is offering is sex.

Emotions get in the way and Hope finds herself falling for the one man who makes her feel safe, but can she help Jack get past his issues and finally give over his heart to her?

This novella was emotion packed and I found myself tearing up half way through.  Considering it is only sixty-one pages, that says a lot for Kaylie Newell's writing talent.  I truly enjoyed the build-up between Jack and Hope.  They didn't just fall into bed after five seconds.  We got a chance to see the reality of the situation through Jack's eyes, who was a widower unsure about being with another woman, and Hope's reality, feeling as if the only thing she had to offer this man was sex.

So don't let the title of the novella deter you from reading this upcoming release.  If you are a lover of May/December romances, or just love reading an emotion packed romance, grab this one up!!

Enjoy and Happy Reading!!

Will Linger in your Mind

A Death that Lingers
Kaylie Newell
Published Nov 21st, 2011
E-book
Beachwalk Press, Inc.
Source: Purchased by Reviewer

This Debut release by Kaylie Newell will linger in your mind long after you read the last page.

The day that she finally leaves her abusive Rock star husband, Josie Collins knows he will be coming after her.  Even after she finds out he is dead.

Josie moves back to the small-town where she grew up, back to her Gran and Poppy who raised her, back to working at the Antique Shop and hanging out with her best friend, Angela.  The only thing different, besides the Handsome New Police Chief, is the feeling that Liam is somehow there in the town, in her home and has no plans to let her go.

Police Chief, Paul Stark has his own Ghosts that linger in his mind, but it is because he has not been able to free himself of the blame for her death.  From the first glance, Paul has an attraction to Josie, but she is a forever kind of girl and he isn't looking for forever.  But something is out to hurt Josie, and Paul will do whatever it takes to make sure that she is safe.

With a little Paranormal Flair, Kaylie writes a very different kind of Romance Suspense.  From the first page, we are connected to Josie.  She is finally leaving her abusive husband and knows it will not be an easy task.  From that point on, we can FEEL him around.  Looking behind our shoulders for him.....creepy.

Even when she arrives at her grandparents, we have no idea if Liam will be there, or if he is coming after her, I honestly will say I had NO idea what was going to happen, and I love that about a book, when I can't guess what will be happening next.

Then she meets Paul Stark, *swoon*, our handsome Police Chief.  The two of them are wildly attracted to each other, but neither is looking to jump into a relationship, until things heat up one night.  Josie starts to have feelings for him, but doesn't want to risk getting hurt again, which we can all understand, especially with a man who tries to keep woman at a distance.

Throw in a lingering spirit that doesn't want Josie to be happy or alive, for that matter, and we have an eerie romance that will have you up late into the night.
