I have been  fortunate enough to meet some FANTASTIC ladies through Facebook and asked each one of them to write me a review of Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor after they received their copy.  So THANK YOU to my fabulous friends, and fellow Tasty Readers, for saying such great things about the book, and I am so glad that you're all excited for the Upcoming release of Sam's book, Rainshadow Road!!

I am thrilled that this book was recommended to me.

What a wonderful story (is it okay to call a story sweet, because that is exactly what it was)!!  How can a person not fall in love with the story line and the characters??

 Maggie, a widow is trying to move on with her life but is still grieving the loss of her husband to cancer. Mark, a bachelor becomes the guardian to his little niece Holly after Mark's sister dies in an accident. Holly has stopped talking since loosing her mother & nothing her uncles try works to get the precious little girl to talk again. Then one day Mark takes Holly to a toy shop(owned by Maggie)and with the "magic" of Fairies & Maggie, Holly starts to talk again. This story is about the romance between a confirmed bachelor who learns how to love & be loved and a widow who thinks she has nothing left to "give" after watching her husband's illness take over.
Holly is the most precious little girl that you find yourself cheering for all of them to have a "happy ever after"

I would highly recommend this story for anyone who is looking for a "feel good" story. In my opinion, you will not be disappointed

That being said, I loved it. I didn’t quite know what to expect from Kleypas, but what I got was humor, holiday joy, and a bit teary-eyed at moments.

Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor is a shorter read than I’m used to, but it was short and sweet. So chemistry comes fast, and pinnacles quick. I was a little stunned when it was over already, but Kleypas tidied up the ending nicely, and I was still left satisfied.

Maggie Conroy is an adorable heroine, and is both realistic and relatable in her struggles to accept love after, *spoiler alert* becoming a young widow.

Mark Nolan. Although I wasn’t super duper attracted to him, I found his relationship with Maggie to be endearing, even though the beginning of their relationship had a rocky start. *Spoiler alert* Rocky start meaning another woman. That was kind of a turn-off for me. I don’t like men that feel they have to be with someone all the time, and just hold onto them until something better comes along…  But I must say, Kleypas did a wonderful job at keeping Nolan likable, and I did root for him and Maggie. They didn’t have explosive, hot chemistry to me, but I think that just makes the book more pleasing for a wider audience.

Being from the area, I have to say I was disappointed there wasn’t more homage paid to the area. I get off on long descriptions though, and I know some people hate those. Kleypas keeps it short and sweet. Not over the top, which is a good thing. I guess I’m just home sick, and I wanted more in the area of Evergreen State glorification.

Last words: I am recommending this book to my mom and my aunt, both love books with a good emotional pull, books that lack over-the-top descriptions. Chemistry between all of the characters was great. Tame read for those that that aren’t ready for bdsm scenes. No bondage or crazy sex play in this holiday novel ;) Kleypas keeps it cute and classy in Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor.

Lisa Kleypas gained another fan, and I’m dying to read one of her historicals. Oh, and if there’s a follow up to this book, I’m there. Sexy brother Sam has a vineyard with my name on it… I wouldn’t mind cheering up melancholy stud Alex either… Bring it on, Kleypas!

Today at A Tasty Read, I have Aida Brassington, Author of Between Seasons, a very different kind of romance that I reviewed yesterday, for all of you who haven't yet read yesterday's post!

Aida is Guest Blogging today about Creepy, Conniving, Mean-Spirited, Evil Villains!!

Let's welcome Aida!!

Every story needs a villain. Cruella de Vil. Hannibal Lecter And in BETWEEN SEASONS, my debut novel, it’s Julie.

Julie is the sister of the woman (Sara) who buys Patrick Boyle’s (the main character in the novel – and a ghost) house. She’s based on someone I know: an extremely religious woman who enjoys manipulating everyone in her life, and she’s good at it. She wants people to give in to her every demand just on principle, and she’s not above lying and bribery, even though she thinks of herself as a godly, good soul.

My guess is you know someone like that, too.

So what’s the purpose of the villain in literature, and how do you create believable villains? Just for starters, a villain creates conflict. Just because I named Cruella de Vil and Hannibal Lecter as classic villains, though, doesn’t mean all villains are so . . . obvious. Many of them are regular people like Julie or Annie Wilkes (remember Misery from Stephen King?).

I think of Julie as the Dolores Umbridge (Harry Potter) type of villain – a little on the one-dimensional side. And it’s done on purpose.

In an ideal world, of course you want to make a fully-realized, nuanced villain. The world of BETWEEN SEASONS is not ideal, nor is it fair. What do I mean by that? The story is told from the point of view of Patrick, a nineteen-year-old dead guy who is stuck in his childhood home. We (the reader) only know Julie through Patrick’s filter, which – as a fairly young person – is black and white and very limited. The only thing Patrick sees is this horrible woman with no redeeming value, so that’s what the reader gets.

It’s by design. Julie would look a lot different if BETWEEN SEASONS were written in third person, or first person told from Sara’s point of view.

But back to that ideal world. If you’re writing a story and want to create a more textured villain, there are some things to keep in mind:

1.       A multi-faceted villain makes them fascinating. Sure, Hannibal Lecter was big into cannibalism, but admit it: you liked him, right? Why? He was charming. Lecter punishes people we (in some instances) believe should be punished. Or what about Annie Wilkes? Sure, she kidnaps and tortures her favorite writer, but she reminds me of my mom (god, I hope she’s not reading this).

2.       Change or die – this is what’s ultimately satisfying for a reader when it comes to villains. It’s not always possible, but we want to see a villain go through some type of transformation, or we want them to die or come to some other unseemly end.  Jack Torrence in The Shining freezes to death. Magneto from The X-Men goes to prison. Syndrome from The Incredibles gets sucked into a plane engine by his cape.

3.       Giving your villain a reason to be mean and nasty is a good thing. Magneto is a great example, and so is Syndrome. In BETWEEN SEASONS, Julie’s reason for being a horrible person are much less complicated than either of those examples, though: she’s worried . . . and she’s convinced what she’s doing is in Sara’s best interests.

While these three paths to writing a great villain are helpful, not every story is going to be able to include each of them. Does it mean a novel (or a movie) is poorer for it? It’s a debatable point – but that’s the beauty of reading: what we like is subjective.

“I’m sure. But I’m good. I even gained a few pounds.” Sara patted her stomach, setting the rocker in motion with her legs. “And this is going to sound weird, but being here is helping.”

“Moving across –”

Sara interrupted. “I’m not talking about relocating. Well, not entirely. I mean this house.”

“What?”

“I don’t feel alone here.”

Patrick froze and slowly cut his eyes back to Sara’s face. He was sure there was no way she could mean what he thought.

She smiled and rubbed her thumbs over the armrest. “I talk out loud.” A moment later she laughed and continued. “At first I talked to Scott… sort of as my own way of dealing with this shit. But then… I don’t know. It feels like there’s someone here with me.”

“You do know how crazy that sounds, right?”

Patrick bristled on Sara’s behalf over the condescension in Jules’ tone since Sara seemed so intent on ignoring it.

“Sure. It’s just that there’s a real history here with this house. Megan told me everyone in town thinks the house is haunted.”

Jules sat up straighter, glancing around and touching the cross at her throat. “Really? Why?”

“She doesn’t really know. It probably has something to do with the house being empty for forty years. You know how it is in small towns.”

“You should call a priest. What if something evil is living here?”

Between Seasons by Aida Brassington is a bit different from most of the Romances that I read.  For one, the whole book takes place in the POV of our Hero, Patrick.  For another, Patrick is dead.  Yes, I know...Sounds strange...but the book was... Fantastic.  I was skeptical if I would enjoy this type of Romance, it seemed to be a bit "darker" than I would normally read, but Patrick is such a wonderful character, and with each page you read you can't help but fall for him yourself. 

Since we get to read the book from Patrick's point of view, we also get a different side of Sara, our heroine.  I can stress enough how much I enjoyed the knowing and the belief that there was something in the house with her, but she wasn't afraid, she almost started to heal because of it.  To be able to watch a love form between these two people was sweet, and I was cheering for Patrick and Sara the whole time.  He finally wasn't alone anymore, and for what it's worth, neither was she.

Aida Brassington does something so different with her debut novel.  Aside from what I mentioned already, she creates a novel that feels as though you are sitting, watching a play.  By using only one setting, the home where Patrick died, I felt as if I was watching the scenes happen right in front of my eyes.

The running theme of 'Seasons' is beautiful hidden in the dialogue and the use of songs and references to the 70's, was like taking a trip back to when my parents were teens.  She also does an impeccable job at describing the difference between then and now, with all of the new inventions that had been created in the last forty years.

I love the foreshadowing of Patrick's dreams, which I won't say too much about here, well...cause I want you to read the book, but I will say, Aida put much thought into where the book was headed and I can't wait to read the sequel, North of Frost...Let's just say the end of Between Seasons leave you wanting more.

I won't get too much into secondary characters, because there is ONE that I do not want to speak of....maybe because she is a "something that rhymes with witch", or because I want you to read the book, so I don't want to give too much away.  Besides, Aida will be Guest Blogging here tomorrow and she is talking "Villains"....so we can talk more about this particular person tomorrow.

I honestly didn't think Between Season was going to be my cup of tea, but Patrick uses his adorable, nineteen year old charms on you and you find yourself at the last page saying "WOW".

This was my first Toni Blake read and I have been a loyal fan ever since.  Tempt Me Tonight is everything that I love in a Great Read: It has the ability to break your heart, put it back together, break it again, squeeze it, step on it and then make you feel like you just won the lottery.  I LOVE IT!!

And it is one book where the prologue is SO necessary in bringing the emotion of the story to an all time high.  I think this is one of my all time favorite "Reunion" reads.  And boy is their "reunion" scene a good one.  After fourteen years apart, Joe Ramsey still has what it takes to knock Ms. Trish on her ass.  Even though this time she vows not to get her heart involved....Um...Yea....sure!!

The emotion are running high and the sex is crazy HOTT!!  This book is so worth the read, that you will want to re-read it the second you finish.

This is one of my Five Star reads and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I have, time and again!

Maybe a little intrigue and high-stakes poker will be the perfect ingredients for these commitment-phobic foodies to whip up a happily ever after.

Scrumptious was a cute, light-hearted, sometimes comical Contemporary Romance centered around Food and Sex.....and yes...there was A LOT of both!

The story overall was good, I enjoyed Marly and Joe as the hero and heroine, who both were commitment phobes always looking for the next piece if ass, until they found each other. I appreciated that we were finally given a heroine who was just as, shall we say promiscuous, as the hero, but we could understand why she never wanted to settle down....how many friends do each of us have that are just like Marly and it turns out they just never had a good view of love.

Some parts were slow and ill admit, a little boring, like the whole Keith saga and the Restaurant business, could have done without all of that business, but then we wouldn't have had half of the book!!

I found myself really enjoying all the sexy banter between Joe and Marly, and their chemistry was off the charts HOTT!! I loved the scenes where they would cook together, the descriptions were amazing and I was left feeling very hungry after finishing this book!!

All in all, it was heart-warming, and funny and I would definitely read another release by Amanda Usen.

First off I must start by saying that this is My Favorite of the "Sweet" Trilogy.  From pages one I was hooked, and the only time I put the book down was 78% through the book so I could scream and rant because I wanted to KILL one of the secondary characters.  UGH!!

If you are planning to purchase any books this year, you need to read this book, ok....first read Sweet Justice (awesome) and Sweet Revenge (crazy awesome), then read Sweet Reward, you will be thanking me!!

I was intrigued by Jared Livingston from Sweet Justice and I was so happy Christy decided to delve a little deeper into his life, and what a life it had been.  I couldn't help but feel sooo much for the little boy he was and for the man he had become, I just wanted to give him a big hug.  The spark of chemistry that happened when Jared and Mia Ryker was ....BAM...and I LOVED every second of Sweet Reward from that second on!!

I usually find myself not loving a heroine when I want the hero for myself...hee hee, but I LOVED Mia just as much as I loved Jared.  She was a spark of bright energy, sweet, loving and we can't forget...KICK BUTT!!  Loved when she took Jared down...haha!!

I loved how "REAL" they were...how well they fit with each other.  I was cheering for them the from the first time they laid eyes on each other and watching them fall in love was like a balm to my soul. 

And I can't forget to give props to Ms. Reece for giving us an amazing adventure.  She has a way of sucking you into the LCR world so you feel as if you are right there in the action, kickin butt along side Mia and Jared.  And your Villains are always.. just that side of crazy, which I love....I haven't read such creepy Villains in a long while, and Phillipe was no different, not scary creepy, but you just felt the need to wipe the stupid grin off his face.  And Mia's sister.....I would have kicked her ass years ago...I have some choice words for her, but I am a lady and I won't let her get to me...hee hee

Ms. Reece....please never stop writing....Your books are amazing and I look forward to many more amazing adventures from you!!

Anticipated Reads of 2012

Hello All....Hope you are all enjoying the First Day of a New Year!!  2012...WOW...Can't believe it is here!!  I have made a few....I hate to say resolutions.....Goals...yeah, goals sounds less......final!!  So I have made a few goals for the up coming year and I will try my hardest....yes...my procrastinating self does have a "hardest" level....and I will use it to accomplish the few goals I have set for myself.  And I wish the best for all of you to accomplish the goals you set out to achieve!!

One of my goals is to work on finishing my Manuscript, so that is what I will be doing for the next two months....my 30th Birthday is the goal date for the rough draft....so I hope I have all of your support to get my ass movin!!  I am still going to be reviewing, but cutting down on how many I read a week!!  So if any of you wonderful ladies reads a GREAT book and feel like doing a Guest Review...I would be honored to publish it!!  Just email me the review!!
