The Governess Club Books One & Two
Handsome but menacing John Taylor is a former prize-fighter turned inn-keeper who is trying to make his way in society. When Louisa shows up at his doorstep he’s quick to accept her offer to help - at a price. He knows that she’s hiding something and he can’t help his protective instincts around the beautiful woman.
Their attraction grows, but will headstrong, fiery Louisa ever trust the surprisingly kind John enough to tell him the dangerous secrets from her past that keep her running? Or will the power of her feelings scare her into running yet again?
Name:
John Taylor. I’ve also been known as the Five Hit
Wonder. Louisa calls me Giant Johnny or her big galoot. But even her calling me
Johnny is nice. She’s the only one who does.
Age:
Nine and twenty
Rank or Peerage or Occupation:
I am an innkeeper now, but
used to a pugilist. The champion, actually. I retired to buy myself the Beefy
Buzzard. I was also a grenadier in His Majesty’s army for four years.
Physical Description:
Oh, I’m big. Mountain-like. Louisa
calling me Giant Johnny is fitting. My fists are the size of another man’s head
and I tower over everyone. I am bald and have a chin-strap beard.
Likes:
Sporting events, exercising in the stable with my
training bag, being active in general. Teasing Louisa also entertains me for
hours.
Dislikes:
Doing the books. Anything to do with paperwork.
When people think I am nothing more than an ignorant boxer who can’t do
anything else.
Relationship Status:
Well, I am with Louisa, but we’re not
married. Or even betrothed. I have asked her several times, but she keeps
pushing it off. I know she’s scared and doesn’t want to lose her independence,
but I love her and don’t want to have any bastard children. I don’t think she
really wants that either, but it will just take some time.
Typical Evening Out:
Oh, we’re always in the inn. We don’t
get evenings out, not unless we are visiting friends or family. Evenings are
the busiest time for the pub, so I work as the barkeep. The payoff of this is
that I get to have lazy mornings in bed with Louisa – if she doesn’t leave to
see to getting breakfast for the guests.
Drink of Choice:
Ale. It’s a favorite of Louisa’s too, so I
have to be sure never to share mine with her – she will guzzle it all in one go
just to prove she can.
Favorite Food:
Steak and kidney pie.
Favorite Book:
I’ve read Tom
Jones several times.
Favorite Dance:
I’ve never learned to dance. I went into the
army when I was ten and four and was fighting professionally by the time I was
nine and ten. Before all that I worked on my father’s farm. I didn’t have time
for dancing.
Best Memory to Date:
I once snuck out on Louisa to fight in
an exhibition bout – she hates the idea of me fighting, but the purse was fifty
quid and I couldn’t pass that up. But she found out and came to watch me. I
didn’t see her arrive, but she was standing so close to the ring that she was
splattered with my blood. Her scream silenced the barn and stopped the fight. I
thought she was going to faint or be sick. But instead she yelled out, “Two
pounds on Giant Johnny!” I was never so proud to win a fight.
Words to live by:
Only you have the power to define
yourself, not what others think of you.
