Bryan’s stomach tightened when he ripped the shower curtain aside to find Sassy asleep on the tub’s porcelain floor with her head leaning back against the tile. Her position didn’t look very comfortable, but as exhausted as she was, it wouldn’t have taken much. Steam floated around her, and the shower spray was hitting the wall two feet above her head.

“Sassy?” He kept his voice low, not wanting to startle her.

She never stirred, but she’d been crying earlier. That much was obvious from the red splotches around her eyes. And if the sight of her wet body in the shower hadn’t brought him to his knees, her tear-splotched face did.

God, please. Let him face another man with a gun and a grenade any day. He had no idea what to do with this woman’s tears.

“Sassy?” He spoke a little louder this time.

Was this just the shock of everything catching up to her?

Praying she’d just sat down for a moment and dozed off and that this wasn’t some residual effect of the concussion, he reached to turn off the still warm water. Otis must have a monster hot water heater in this place.

Ignoring the torque in his back, he grabbed the threadbare towel and borrowed robe from the countertop and reached to pull her up and out of the tub.

When he leaned down over her, her blue eyes flew open. Only then did she react. But not like he would have expected. She went wild.

“No, dammit. No. Don’t touch me … don’t ever touch me. Just stop! Stop!”

“Sassy? Sassy, it’s me.” He dropped the robe on her shoulder and leaned back in a squat beside the tub.

Her eyes were glassy and unfocused. She jumped to her feet and covered her breasts with one hand protectively across her chest. He sat on his haunches, taking in the sight of a naked, wet Sassy standing over him. Momentarily stunned, he never saw it coming.

When her other fist connected with his jaw, the cracking sound reverberated around the bathroom. Still in a squat, he tipped backward. His shoulder bounced off the countertop and he landed on his ass directly on the wet linoleum. He felt the jolt all the way up his back again.

Jesus. He’d forgotten she definitely didn’t hit like a girl. Damn.

The slap of his butt hitting the wet floor seemed to pull her from wherever she’d been. Her eyes widened and her mouth opened in a wide O.

“Bryan. Ohmigod. I’m so sorry. I … sat down to shave my legs and … I must have dozed off.”

The shock on her face no doubt mirrored his own as he rubbed his jaw. “Just glad you weren’t holding the razor,” he mumbled.

She started to reach for him, then stopped. He saw the moment she remembered she was stark naked.

“I need to paint.” This is what I tell Clovis as we head downstairs for breakfast. “Can it wait?” he asks. “No.” My reply is quick. Honest. No, it cannot wait. My feet leave the marble stairs and sink into the plush carpet of the living room. There are other pack members at the table, eating already. I don’t see Mr. Tondjii, to my surprise. Clovis bends to kiss me on the head and delivers the gift of a few words that no one else can hear. “He’s tending to business. Eat.” So, Mr. Tondjii won’t be down here with us. My relief is immediate. Until I see Mattius watching me. Clovis takes my hand and leads me to the selection of food on the oversize island in the middle of the kitchen. It’s a buffet. Fruit and breads and, on a warmer, something that looks like Cream of Wheat. I help myself to fruit salad and a piece of bread peppered with nuts and seeds and grain, enough to energize me. We take a seat at the table, though it makes me nervous. We passed an older woman—another poacher’s wife, Clovis informed me—on the way down the stairs, but aside from her and Mrs. Tondjii, I’m the only female here. Definitely the only one currently at the table. I can only guess where the clothes that have been provided for me came from. Ex-girlfriends? Daughters? There was more than enough to choose from, but I tried to stick to the most basic of items. I am very aware of the way the other men stare at me like I’m what they want to be eating instead of the plethora of food spread out before them. Clovis doesn’t seem fazed. I guess looking is okay—maybe the least of all evils here. I keep my eyes downcast. Eat my food quickly and listen to them speak in a language I don’t understand. I have a feeling that Mattius is still staring at me, but I don’t check to see if my intuition is right. “What now?” I ask Clovis, taking the last bite of bread. My plate is clean. “How does a trip into the jungle sound?” Clovis asks, like it’s no big deal. Just some time to kill, so why not. A thrill kicks through me. I hold tight to my energy. I can’t let my voice betray how much I like that idea. I shrug. “Whatever you want.” Clovis pats my leg under the table. It feels like he’s telling me, Good job. “I don’t have patrol until tonight. You can come if you want. Otherwise, we’re good,” Clovis says, laying out the plan. I wonder if the other men will mind. Joining Clovis seems better than staying at the house with them. “Fine with me,” I say. I brave a glance at Mattius and find him looking right back at me, as I suspected.“What are you doing today?” I ask. I think about how I’m supposed to be one of them, getting along with the others. “Don’t know,” Mattius replies. There is a hint of surprise in his voice. “Why?” I continue to look directly at him. “Didn’t know if maybe you wanted to come into the forest with us.” He definitely looks surprised now. I almost smile. “Unless you wanted to go alone?” I ask Clovis suggestively. Like maybe we would be doing things in the forest. Passionate things. This must be what sells it for Mattius, because he says, “No, thanks. I’m fine here. You guys have fun.” Good thing. I don’t know what I would have done if he’d actually said yes. It was a gamble.

“Not you?”

“Almost.”

I let out a sigh of relief. “And?”

“I’ve maintained friendships with some of the people who are still active members. I wanted to help, Erin. I can’t live with the idea of Thomas being your first. I know how much you hate him. So I called in a favor and had that invitation sent to your house.”

I gape at her, completely caught off guard. I guess everyone harbors secrets. “Why didn’t you just say so?”

She smiles. “I wanted to make sure you made an informed decision without any influence from me. I want you to own this opportunity, to be in control.”

“I’m a virgin, remember? What do I know?”

Katie laughs. “Technically yes, but you’ve done things, girlfriend.”

I don’t know whether to take it as a compliment or insult. But Katie doesn’t do anything half-ass, she’s gregarious. “Yes.” With Foster. But I don’t want to discuss this right now. Not with him only feet away. I need to think, alone. “There’s a new order of books in the storage room that need tags. Think you can handle it?”

“Erin?” Mary is back.

“Is everything okay?”

“Mr. Wagner is gone, but . . .”

“What?” I stand. “Did his credit card get denied?”

“No.” She shakes her head. “He told me he doesn’t like Poe and only bought the books to meet you.”

Katie clicks her tongue.

“I think he was flirting with you.”

“No, he was serious.”

“Do you remember his full name?” I ask.

“How could I forget?” She’s practically swooning. “Foster Everett Wagner.”
